Navigation
Navigation of the Cheviot varies lots throughout the full distance.
As you are having the record your attempt you will have either a GPS watch or GPS unit, you can download the .gpx file/ course for the Cheviot round from 'The Round' page on this website.
As well as a GPS/ GPS watch navigation you should also carry either an OS map (Cheviot Hills - OL16) or a Harvey Map for the Cheviot Hills
Start and finish point
The start and finish point is Alwinton, Northumberland.
Please be as respectful to to the local residence if you are arriving/ departing during the night.
We recommend a lunchtime start/ finish as this will not disturb any local residents.
Supported attempt
If you choose so a support team can really aid your experience when completing the Cheviot Round.
There is a full page looking at the x 3 mail transition areas (not including the start/finish) where a support team can meet you to aid your round attempt. More about the transition areas here.
Unsupported or solo attempt
If you choose to undertake the Cheviot round unsupported or as a solo attempt please do -
1. Notify someone of your actions and what time you will be completed by and leave them a map of the Cheviot Round.
2. Instruct this person what time you will be home (or be in touch with them upon completion), We advise to give yourself 2 or three hours after the 24 hours, just incase you are unable to complete it within the 24 hours.
3. Instruct the designated person what to do if you have not made contact at the agreed time. i.e. Phone police and ask for mountain rescue.
Food drop
Before you set off you may wish to leave some food/ liquid drops for your attempt.
The best locations would be near to the listed transition areas as these are the locations where the Cheviot Round crosses roads.
Night section
It is advisable to recce your night section before attempting the Cheviot Round.
This will certainly help your attempt and on 'The Round' page you will see we have created 'legs' of the route. You can make some of these legs into circular training routes so you can practice and familiarise yourself with your night section.
Round attempt : time of year
You can attempt the Cheviot Round at any time of the year, but be aware sections of The Cheviots can get very wet during the winter months.
Therefore it is advised to attempt and winter attempts (between 1st December and 28/29 February) when it is frosty and the ground is hard.
Pacers
Pacers are allowed for record attempts, but is is recommended the pacers familiarise themselves with the route first

- Map - Ordnance Survey Explorer OL16
- Compass
- GPS Unit/ GPS Watch
- Whistle (6 blasts in an emergency, repeated every minute)
- Survival bag
- Spare base layer
- Hat and gloves
- Waterproof jacket
- Waterproof trousers
- Head Torch with new batteries or carry spare batteries
- Minimum of 500ml water
- Emergency food/sport bar
- Fully charged mobile phone
- Personal First aid kit, including blister plasters
- Appropriate footwear for the terrain (walking boots or fell running shoes)
- Spare socks, quality running/ walking socks from Capricorn Mohair Socks.

- Sun hat
